The Applications of Monoclonal Antibodies

Monoclonal antibodies are identical proteins cloned from a single parent cell, which are capable of binding to a specific biochemical determinant in a sample. These compounds are used in an array of fields and applications, including: diagnostics; toxicology screening; pharmaceuticals; and more.

Monoclonal Antibodies for Diagnostic Applications

Monoclonal antibodies are chiefly implemented in diagnostic test equipment which require reagents with excellent target-specify to ensure results accuracy. These include radioimmunoassay (RIA) equipment, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (EIA or ELISA), and immunochromatographic or lateral flow assays.

Radioactive RIA assay equipment is exclusively available for laboratory purposes for the study of radiolabeled biological molecules, and for the establishment of biomarkers for various antibodies and antigens. It is capable of quantitatively and qualitatively analyzing biological samples such as blood or hair to detect the presence of therapeutic drugs or drugs of abuse with extreme sensitivity down to the nearest Nano gram (ng).

EIA tests meanwhile are commercially available for rapid, preliminary toxicology screenings. They primarily introduce monoclonal antibodies in conjunction with a substrate to a biological sample, to elicit a chromatic response proportional to the concentration of a given analyte. Pyxis Labs recently explored the different methods of EIA testing in more detail.

Monoclonal antibodies are also used in various established and emerging kits for the early determination of biological conditions, for example: conjugated monoclonal antibodies are widely utilized in lateral flow tests for pregnancy detection.

Monoclonal Antibodies for Pharmaceuticals

Monoclonal antibodies have exhibited exceptional medicinal promise since their inception due to their organic targeting. Drug conjugation with monoclonal antibodies presents significant potential to improve drug delivery by increasing the drug quantity that reaches an infected, inflamed, or damaged locality. Enzymatically bound cell-surface specific monoclonal antibodies and inactive drug molecules have proven extremely effective at delivering improved drug yields to targeted cells.

Further research is ongoing into the field of using monoclonal antibodies for pharmaceutical use.
